Toronto FC looks at upgrades to BMO Field

12/07/2008 7:59 AM - With a waiting list of 13,000 for season tickets, Toronto FC is looking at some serious ugrades to BMO Field, including real grass and a new training facility.

BMO Field has a capacity of 20,000; the original game plan called for a 30,000-seat facility, but it was downsized to save money. It was also funded by the province and the city as a community facility; hence the FieldTurf, which allows heavy use most of the year.

But the FieldTurf has proven unpopular in MLS circles as well as with members of the Canadian national team, who opted to train at Montreal's Saputo Stadium because it sports a grass field. Putting in grass is more of a challenge than you may think: it requires the city and province to sign off on a usage plan with less community involvement.
