Luck: May is make-or-break month for new Dynamo stadium

Houston Dynamo President Oliver Luck says May is the make-or-break month for a new stadium, as the team and government bodies finalize a financing plan.

Work on the facility is proceeding, however; the site has been leveled, and a required archeological excavation survey is scheduled for next week.

The Dynamo has upped its contribution to the new facility, pledging 75 percent of the total cost (around $60 million) and any overruns. The city and Harris County would put in the rest, with the county's share coming by the site becoming part of the East Downtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, which includes the site. (The city has already paid $15.5 million for the land; that's not part of the project cost.)

The current plan is for a 22,000-seat stadium opening in 2011; the $85-million facility will have 34 suites, a 3,000-seat club level and stage on the south end. For the stadium to open in 2011, construction would need to begin by the fall -- which is why the clock is ticking.
