With Rio Tinto Stadium taking center stage during Wednesday night's MLS All-Star Game, it's a good time to look back and see how that facility has affected the bottom line for Real Salt Lake.
According to team owner Dave Checketts, RSL is fourth in MLS when it comes to a variety of criteria -- sales figures, attendance, season tickets -- ranking behind Seattle, Toronto and Los Angeles. That's pretty good territory, and it says a lot about how far MLS has come in the last few years. Remember, three years ago Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders did not exist on the MLS level.
Let's just say it's safe to say that without Rio Tinto Stadium that fourth-place ranking would not exist. And though it was a horrendous fight for the facility, it was well worth it for Checketts and crew.
